Trainee: “What are the hatha schools?”
“These and many more: Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Flow, Bikram, Iyengar, Anusara, Power, Kripalu, Laughing Lotus, Yoga Works, Jivamukti, etc. The only schools I steer trainees away from are ones that don’t focus on asanas (body postures), like Kundalini (this is an experienial school, which I teach in depth in the training) Kriya (a devotional school) etc. Check out any yoga studio near you and ask for a list of the types of yoga they teach. 90% will be hatha schools. These are mostly fine. Not sure? Call the studio and ask me about it. 323-782-0741. I’ll be glad to assist you in finding a hatha style that works for you.
Most yoga studios will create a printout of your accomplished classes for you, which you can then email, mail or fax to us for your license. It’s paperwork, but absolutely necessary paperwork. If you study privately, have your instructor sign off on a attendance you sheet you make yourself noting the date, time, length, style and location of the class. Then have that person write a brief letter on your behalf stating your attendance in class.
Trainee: “I’m concerned that I can’t get all of the yoga hours completed before I come to the training.”
“The yoga hours are 30 hours of classes, preferably w/ a single teacher in a single hatha (physical) style in any period of 16 weeks. This means 15, 2-hour classes or 20, 1.5 hour classes (or a combination thereof) in a 4-month period. If you break it down this is approximately 2 classes per week. Its honestly an easy accomplishment and a necessary one. The YBB hatha yoga section which takes place at the close of class is really only 10-15 minutes long, but you have to know what you’re doing to teach it. In our weekend training, there’s simply not enough time to transmit all that yoga is! Yoga is such a profound system that it simply cannot be taught and assimilated in a short period of time. It requires at least a few months of study to sink in even for our small use with it. Delve into your hatha yoga studies as you would any beloved thing.
Your 30 hours of yoga training don’t have to be completed before the YBB Teacher Training. (Although this would help call forward your intention to teach YBB. The weekend workshop is highly motivating, transmitting to all involved a very powerful charge of energy and inspiration. To begin teaching shortly after completing the training will be propelled forward by this huge momentum.) These hours just have to be completed to earn the license to teach. I have had trainees complete the training, pass the exams and then wait almost a year to submit their proof of 30 hours. These women still attained their license to teach and now instruct YBB prosperously well.”
